James Bridle: A Crab Computer the Size of the World

Almost all of today’s computers work in the same way, according to a plan laid down in the middle of the Twentieth Century by Alan Turing. This form of computation shapes the way we think about the world, and is inextricably tied to material extraction, environmental destruction, and human domination of the planet. But what other forms might computers take? Biological, non-binary, and relational computing offer a vision of a cybernetic future which learns from the animals, plants and other organisms around us, while contributing to global regeneration. James Bridle explores the history and future of computation, artificial intelligence, and the natural sciences to imagine a technology reintegrated with the natural world, and more aligned with other beings, a planetary ecology, and our collective flourishing.
